MCs are puppets. Me I'm Jim Henson.

oh yeah.
we are playing wednesday night -probably around 10:30- at the Highland pup at SFU. $6. apparently more information is found in the "toour" section on the site. but i always figure people check this more often. plus the site is jokes. i mean, c'mon flowers- how long has it been since we got back from the summer tour... err... i mean toour? jokes, man.
sorry leigh. happy birthday junger. happy birthday in two days deaner. lay off the tree, eh buddy?
as plans go we have october busy-ness ahead, and then i believe we are hitting up the island again in november. but where, do you say, where is all the time you guys were supposed to be taking off to write and record and things ("and where is my frickin' t-shirt?!"- colbs)? we are trying to get our act together. but those of you who know us well know that that can take an indeterminate amount of time... if it ever happens at all. but no need to get down- things feel like they are picking up. as it works out ash can get a girl (and an amazing one at that) and still throw down as well as ever (asian delegation: 2, "white bread": 0). and the rest of us are trying (in our own fashion) to keep pace. im optimisitic. the creative juices are starting to flowin. hooner's working on a duet with Ashante... or Faith Hill... or something. it's gonna be great. promise.

musical things I've been marvelling at recently:
the bomb squad's production on fear of a black planet
dizzee rascal's ridiculously great flow on boy in da corner
larry graham's sexy sexy bass on sly's singles
sufjan and ac newman's (new pornographers) writing abilites on their recent respective releases
(by the way- did anybody see the new pornographer's show the other week? i was tired (lame) and didn't go)

..there is a song on the new Blackalicious called "side to side"... check it out. it makes me happy.

- until next time

...

Let's get the business out of the way so we can get busy in other ways (if you know what I'm saying. Uh...do you? Cause I sure don't).

Listening to Hayden - Trees Lounge

Okay, we're on the island next week. What was supposed to be a 4 day trip has turned into a 2 day trip. Go to the toour.blogspot.com page to get the details. In terms of start times, etc. I don't really know. Your best bet is to phone the venues. If you have friends on the island (which I know you do so don't try and act like you don't), please pass on the info.

Listening to the Lemonheads - Outdoor Type

We're also playing a show up in Burnaby on the Wednesday. If you can make it out, that would be awesome. We're playing with Sean Wesley Wood and the Vancouver Vipers who apparently have members of the WPP or something. Excited? Yes. Yes, you are.

Listening to Sade - By Your Side

The site has been updated with some decent videos of our experience at the Pacific Coliseum. We might end up posting the whole thing or just do another DVD giveaway thing. There's also a couple new tabs and some new scans of reviews/articles.

Listening to Nat King Cole/Natalie Cole - Unforgettable

If anyone can help us in booking an October tour, please feel free to send me an e-mail with anything that you have (info for promoters/venues, etc.). We really need stuff in Winnipeg (the city in which we've been thrice shafted) and Saskatchewan.

Listening to Pedro the Lion - Criticism as Inspiration

This is fun: http://n.ethz.ch/student/mkos/pinguin.swf
The highest I got was 320.3 or something.

Blogs are all the rage these days and this one is very very funny:
http://felixfruhling.blogspot.com/

Listening to The Appleseed Cast - Fishing the Sky

And has anyone heard about the speculation of an Apple Tablet? Apparently Steve Jobs has filed a patent application for a tablet style mac about 8 inches in diameter....like the same thickness of the powerbook/ibook screens but with all the guts inside. This is very exciting. Very exciting indeed.

Listening to Gillian Welch - Everything is Free (Jon, you have to do this cover the next time I see you play)

I fear I may have lost my regular status at the Memphis Blues. After visiting for the first time since May, I only knew one of the staff members. I actually had to tell them my name when waiting for a table. And they wouldn't give me a deal on subsitutions. I'm washed up. I'm a failure. Flowers, you're going to have to show me around this strange new world.

I just learned the dance moves for Stop by the Spice Girls so you can expect to witness a performing arts extravaganza at our next show.

Listening to: Damien Jurado - Tonight I Will Retire

I've tried to start reading Trainspotting. It's written phonetically with the Scottish accents and it is so hard to read. It took me an hour to get through 6 pages. Apparently I will become accustomed to the style...I just don't know if I have the patience or the dilligence to get to that point. Here's an example of what I'm talking about (profanity alert):
-Aw, ah sais. Ah wanted the radge tae jist fuck off ootay ma visage, tae go oan his ain, n jist leave us wi Jean-Claude.

I'm all for artistic expression and stuff but I'm not quite sure I agree with the destruction of the written language. I mean there's enough literary chaos going on with instant messaging and e-mail these days it just makes me frustrated. Granted, I don't have the most perfect grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation but there's some nebulous dark cloud that I feel whenever I see someone who intentionally is trying to butcher the written word.

Listening to: Radiohead - A Punchup at a Wedding

Listening to: Police - Every Breath You Take

Just to let you know I'm not incredibly slow at typing (as one could deduct from the amount of songs I have listened to over the course of this blog). I've been doing other things and it's only when I'm waiting for something to load or export that I end up typing.

Okay. I'm out.

...

Show was fun last night. Last minute...but fun.

The actress who played Stacy Corosi on Saved By the Bell just got a mid-lifetime achievement award on Ellen.

Haven't watched a movie since Friday. I feel so lost in this world without movies in my life.

Currently listening to: entire radiohead catalogue (major releases, not singles).

Choke/Ghosts of Modern Man/Daggermouth

Wow, what a great show last night. A solid lineup put together by some solid people = success! Big thanks to Adam and Lindsay and whoever else helped last night (Georgi, Ali, I don't know who else) and also to the amazing guys in all the three other bands, Choke, Ghosts of Modern Man and Daggermouth. And thanks to everybody that came out. It's encouraging to see so many people out despite the fact that Destiny's Child had their last show last night...ever! But I guess it just goes to show that slobs in bands are more bootylicious than Beyonce.

I take that back. No one is more Bootylicious than Beyonce. I don't know what came over me.

Well, I don't know how this keeps happening (shows, that is) but we are helping out Frank from Rumbletone productions. He was in a bind to get a band for this Wednesday night and we couldn't resist saying no to such an incredible individual. He is, in all honesty, one of the best, most honest, friendliest and organized promoters in town and you should all make an effort to support what he does (and promoting shows is what he does....full time!). Of course, I say "you" with the delusion that anybody actually reads this. What a misguided soul I am. What a misguided Sole I am. Wut a miss guy did sohle eye am.

The show is at Pub 340 with a band called Inflation Kills from Southern Ontario. Some of the guys used to be in the band Kitchens and Bathrooms on Sonic Unyon and numerous people have told me that K&B was their favourite Canadian band. In fact, Brenan from Despistado was one of those people. He loved them! (http://www.myspace.com/theinflationkills)

So if you have the coin, please come on out.
(edit: Show starts promptly at 9pm, set times are 9/10/11pm. We are on last but come support the Inflation Kills. Cover is $6).

On a completely unrelated note, I partook in a hamburger today topped with ranch dressing. What a simple idea that makes me wonder "Why didn't I think of this before?". And then it makes me think, "Mmmmmmmmmm...ranch."

Who else is excited at the future possibilities of the Motorola ROKR? Anyone? Anyone? Oh yeah, and iTunes 5 gets a moderate thumbs down for me. I prefer the look and feel of version 4.x. Why'd Steve Jobs have to go changing things? The playlist folders are cool but the refined search bar seems useless if you're not into Podcasts and audio books.

A feature that I think would be most welcome in iTunes is the ability to set rules on songs. Like, only play this song between November 30th and December 26th (Rocking Around the Christmas Tree by Amy Grant). Or, play this song only when it's summer time and I'm in the city (Summer in the City). Or, only play this song between the hours of 9pm and midnight when I go to sleep (I Dream A Highway by Gillian Welch). Or, only play this song when I'm making out with my significant other (Let's Get It On). Any other examples I can use in my letter that I write to Steve Jobs?

In the past week and a bit I've tried to catch up on some movies I haven't seen before...Mallrats and Chasing Amy (catching up on the Kevin Smith) and also The Notebook and A Walk To Remember (catching up on the Nicholas Sparks novels-turned-movies). I would give a wholehearted thumbs up to all 4 movies. And no I did not cry in the latter two films....much to my dismay.

I've rambled on long enough. Time to attempt to watch the Usual Suspects for the 4th time. Wish me luck.

Most recently played songs on my iTunes (shuffle mode):
Sussudio - Phil Collins
Redford (For Yia-Yia and Pappou) - Sufjan Stevens
So Good - Destiny's Child.

Yup.

Don't forget:

Admission to my first concert (Hokus Pic in some small hall in New West): $5

Time spent waiting at the gate with Warren at the Radiohead concert: 12 hours (approx.)

Trip to see Coldplay and others at the Gorge: $300 US (I had to buy two tickets)

Seeing both the 29 year old former frat boys at the Pearl Jam concert and the 11 year old hoochie mamas at the Backstreet Boys concert have the same hysterical reaction to their favourite bands:

Priceless.

Yes it's true. I attended two shows at GM place in the span of 2 days. The only thing that could make it even better is if someone were to come up with free tickets to Destiny's Child next week (even though we have a show at the Brickyard that night).

The weird thing is that I think I knew more songs at the Backstreet Boys concert than I did at the Pearl Jam one. And I felt more comfortable shrieking along with the hoochie mamas than I did with the rocker guys.

So I just watched A Walk To Remember (probably the best thing to do when you get back from a night full of happy beverages at 2:30am). A lot of people have told me that this was a very touching movie...some have cried, some have laughed but overall, I have been told to watch it by most that have seen it.

Nobody told me about the soundtrack though. What's with the Breeders' Cannonball right off the top of the movie. Not to mention Missy Elliot played back to back with a Jars of Clay song? If it wasn't the heartfelt display of emotions from Shane West and Mandy Moore, I would've been on the floor busting not one, but two guts.

See you Saturday!

Small Planes - the Innocence Mission
